The Toyota Prius chooses seamlessly between sources to consistently deliver maximum performance and efficiency at every stage of your drive.</p><br /><p>Unlike anything on the road today, the main electric motor can power the car on electricity alone at up to 48km/h (EV-Mode) for up to 2km, making the Prius the most advanced and radically fuel-efficient car in the world.</p><br /><p>The high-power electric motor requires less output from the petrol engine providing further economies in fuel and CO2 emissions.</p>
<p>The Stop & Start feature lowers fuel consumption even further by switching off the petrol engine when stopping. At standstill the car releases zero emissions and provides a noticeable silence.</p><br /><p>Using the electric motor to start the car, ensures a faster and smoother restart.</p>
<p>A new and exclusive 4-cylinder, 1.8 litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine generates 98 DIN hp at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm.</p><br /><p>This new exceptional engine delivers higher torque at lower revolutions – a reduction of 300 rpm at 120 km/h- combining quieter running with a 10% improvement in long distance cruising fuel economy.</p><br /><p>Using the Atkinson cycle petrol engine is maximised for operating efficiency and additionally supported by the electric motor for optimized power output.</p>
<p>Toyota has introduced a beltless engine configuration to reduce mechanical losses. The electrically controlled water pump is now only used when the vehicle’s operating conditions require. Additionally, this reduces engine maintenance, as no belts require replacing.</p><br /><p>A new engine heat management system recovers exhaust heat – which is normally wasted – to heat up the engine and interior cabin more quickly resulting in improved cold weather fuel economy and cabin comfort.</p><br /><p>Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation reintroduces cooled exhaust gases into the engine for better efficiency.</p>
<p>Developed through proven and reliable NiMH technology, the new compact battery delivers higher energy output (27 kW) and a larger capacity than any other hybrid system. Energy recovery is maximised by a high performance integrated cooling system.</p><br /><p>A new 37% more compact inverter has faster switching for improved efficiency, and now converts the battery’s direct current into a higher, 650 volt (+150 volt) alternating current to drive the electric motor and, occasionally, the generator.</p>

<p>Combined, the two power sources offer a total output of 136 hp using only 3.9L of fuel per 100km and emitting as little as 89g/km of CO2.</p><br /><p>Offering performance to match any conventional 2.0 litre vehicle, the new Prius will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 10.4 seconds.</p><br /><p>The new 60 kW electric motor offers a 20% increase in power and a 33% reduction in weight over that of the current Toyota hybrid system. Working in combination with the petrol engine it improves acceleration and can also power the driven wheels in electric mode.</p>
<p>The Hybrid Synergy Drive® battery output has been increased to a maximum of 27kW (+2kW).</p><br /><p>To power the electric motor a new power control unit converts the battery’s direct current into an alternating current using a higher voltage of 650 volt (+150 volt compared to the previous system).</p>
<p>To further increase driving pleasure and performance a power drive mode may be selected on-demand.</p><br /><p>This power-mode modifies the response of the hybrid system to throttle inputs, here boosting power to offer an impressive, seamless acceleration.</p>
The synergy of petrol engine and electric motors deliver seamless torque and acceleration. The 1.8L petrol engine provides 32Nm more torque at lower rpm and a strong electric motor output of 60 kW. The powerful 136 hp system accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds.
<p>Choose EV (Electric Vehicle) mode to drive in electric only. The electric motor is remarkably quiet compared to a petrol engine. Ideal for driving in residential areas early in the morning or late at night. You can even move quietly in and out of a parking garage, where sound is often amplified.</p><br /><p>Hybrid Synergy Drive® allows the driver to select electric mode only for speeds up to 48 km/h.</p><br /><p>Furthermore, the Stop & Start system results in no engine noise at standstill.</p>
<p>The new 1.8 litre engine delivers higher torque at lower revolutions allowing a reduction of 300 rpm at a highway speed of 120 km/h.</p><br /><p>During acceleration the engine offers more torque already at lower speeds which keeps the engine in the mid-range rev-band and thus allows quieter running.</p>
