Driving thoughtfully

External reserach shows that simple EcoDriving techniques can save drivers money at the pump and cut CO2 exhaust emissions by as much as 10%.

That's why Toyota Sales Representatives are trained to promote and demonstrate better driver habits to potential customers as part of the sales process.

Drivers also have an opportunity to sign up to EcoDriving workshops in their communities.

While all efforts are made to reduce waste and CO2 emissions during production of a vehicle, one fact remains: the most emissions occur during the vehicle’s use, while driving.

External research shows that EcoDriving is an effective and proven way of helping drivers save money at the pump and cut CO2 exhaust emissions by as much as 10% through smarter driving techniques and habits.

Innovative technologies from Toyota Optimal Drive

Toyota’s Gear Shift Indicator, available on Auris, iQ and Corolla, shows drivers when to shift gear for optimal environmental performance. It takes into account driving conditions, including the level that the accelerator is pressed, and vehicle speed. Fuel savings can be as high as 5%.

Toyota’s Top 10 EcoDriving tips

1. Remove any extra weight and roof load
Before setting off, think about what you’re carrying in your car. Extra weight means extra energy consumption, so remove anything that’s not really necessary. If you’re using a roof rack, be aware that the resulting wind drag can increase fuel consumption by up to 40%.

2. Plan your route and avoid detours
Planning your journey in advance (possibly by taking advantage of a navigation system) can help you avoid unnecessary detours and city traffic, where fuel consumption is twice as high as on the motorway.

3. Avoid using your car for short journeys
Fuel consumption is highest when the engine is cold, so avoid taking short trips whenever possible.

4. Check your tyre pressure regularly
Checking your tyre pressure monthly and setting it to the recommended pressure can save you up to 3% in fuel consumption as well as helping to increase your tyres’ life.

5. Service your car according to owner’s manual
A car that is regularly serviced to the manufacturer’s standards helps achieve safe, energy-conscious driving.

6. Shift earlier to a higher gear
A higher gear always means a lower engine speed, which results in lower fuel consumption. Modern engines are more flexible than ever, and allow early shifts to higher gears without the risk of damage to the engine. The ideal shift point is between 2000 and 2500 rpm.

7. Only use electrical accessories when necessary
All electrical accessories such as rear screen heater, fog lamps, etc., consume energy. The use of air-conditioning, for example, can increase fuel consumption by up to 25%. Electrical accessories should only be used when necessary.

8. Follow and anticipate traffic flow
By anticipating traffic flows you can avoid any unnecessary delays. Driving in smooth traffic also means you can more easily shift to a higher gear earlier, thus allowing you to achieve and maintain a lower engine speed, and therefore a lower fuel consumption. It is also advisable to speed up with the accelerator pedal pushed down in a consistent manner.

9. Keep your windows closed
Fuel consumption can be reduced by up to 5% simply by keeping windows closed and using the in-car ventilation system.

10. Switch your engine off if you have to wait longer than 30-60 seconds
Running your engine while the car is stationary wastes fuel. Switch off your engine if you plan to wait longer than 30 seconds in your car without moving.
