Selling & Servicing

We strive to ensure that our vehicles are sold and serviced in eco-friendly showrooms.

In 2008, we launched a pan-European programme to 'green' our 3,000-strong network of Toyota retailers, the first initiative of its kind by an automaker in Europe.

Sustainable Retailers are subject to rigorous environmental assessments which help owners reduce energy, waste and water consumption, plus their CO2 footprint.

The programme is all-encompassing, meaning that it covers everything from roofing insulation, and rainwater re-use to solar panels on the roof. It even considers the type of paper used in printers and the light fittings in showrooms, for example.

The programme applies to both new builds and major refurbishments – each must undergo a rigorous environmental assessment. Existing retail outlets are also subject to an energy kaizen audit. On-site checks help business owners implement simple and practical changes to reduce their impact on the environment.

100% of retailers in Europe are expected to have participated in the audit by 2013, and to have secured ISO 14001 certification by 2015.

Setting exacting standards: each new retailer or major refurbishment is subject to a Toyota Retailer Environmental Assessment across nine categories: energy, waste, water, materials, pollution, land use & ecology, health & well-being, plus management and transport. The assessment is designed to encourage best practice in eco-friendly construction and design.
Toyota is currently building its first flagship Sustainable Retailer in La Rochelle, France, paving the way for a new generation of eco-friendly dealerships. An additional two Sustainable Retailers are also under construction in Salzburg, Austria and Maribor, Slovenia.

Projected savings versus the ‘average’ retailer

  • 72% reduction in energy consumption per square metre
  • 50% saving in water consumption per vehicle
  • 29% reduction in water consumption per employee
  • 100% less NOx emissions per year
  • 100% green electricity from solar panels

Greening the fleet business

Eco-friendly fleet vehicles can offer competitive bottom-line performance. Capgemini, Ikea and GlaxoSmithKline are recent examples of multi-nationals who have opted to drive down the total CO2 emissions, fuel consumption and tax costs of their fleets with Toyota’s greenest ambassador, the hybrid Prius.
