Concept Cars FT-86 Sports Concept

Toyota has a long history of creating exciting, driver-focused sports cars. With the Future Toyota-86 Sports Concept, Toyota now previews the next generation.

The inspiration is the superb Corolla Levin AE86, built from 1983-1987. It was the must-have choice for rallying with its front engine, rear-wheel drive powertrain, compact dimensions, impeccable balance and superior power-to-weight ratio.

The front engine, rear-wheel drive FT-86 perfectly recaptures the spirit of Corolla Levin AE86. An entirely driver-oriented concept, FT-86 is dedicated to the realisation of dynamic power with environmental responsibility. It is designed to give form to the joy of driving, through instantaneous responses to the smallest input.

It combines a free-revving, 2.0 litre petrol engine and a 6-speed manual transmission with compact dimensions, light weight and a low centre of gravity. This awards FT-86 lively, accessible performance and highly engaging dynamic abilities.

The classic sports car form of the FT-86 has been generated entirely through the constraints of aerodynamics and function, dubbed ‘Functional Beauty’ by ED2, Toyota’s European Design Development centre.

On board is an entirely functional, ergonomically ideal cockpit, with the widespread use of sporting, ultra-lightweight components and finishes.

The FT-86 Sports Concept is the result of an August 2009 announcement that Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries will launch a jointly developed compact rear-wheel drive sports car.
