Eco-driving

Toyota is committed to helping minimize the environmental impact of emission gases such as CO2, produced when fuel is consumed by your car. By driving responsibly and by being aware of eco-driving, you can not only save yourself money by using less fuel but you can also contribute to help reducing harmful emissions to the atmosphere, which can contribute to global warming.

Remove any extra weight and roof load

Before setting off, think about what you are carrying in your car. Extra weight means extra energy consumption so try to balance them within the car. And if you are using a roof rack, be aware that wind drag caused by roof loads can increase fuel consumption by up to 40%.

Plan your route and avoid detours

Planning your journey in advance (possibly by taking advantage of a navigation system) can help you avoid unnecessary detours and town traffic, where fuel consumption is twice as high as on the motorway.

Avoid using your car for short journeys

Not taking short trips when fuel consumption from a cold engine is at its highest you will also help keep fuel costs down.

Check your tyre pressure regularly

Checking your tyre pressure monthly and setting it to the recommended pressure can save you up to 3% in fuel consumption as well as helping increasing your tyres’ life.

Service your car according to owner’s manual

A regularly serviced car to the standards stipulated by the manufacturer helps achieve safe energy-conscious driving.

Shift up gear earlier

A higher gear always means a lower engine speed which results in a lower fuel consumption. Modern engines are much more flexible than before, and allow early shifts to higher gears without the risk of damage to the engine. The ideal shift point is between 2000 and 2500 rpm.

Only use electrical accessories when necessary

All electrical accessories such as rear screen heater, fog lamps etc. consume energy. The use of air-conditioning for example can increase fuel consumption by up to 25%. Therefore electrical accessories should only be used when necessary.

Follow and anticipate traffic flow

By anticipating traffic flows you can avoid any unnecessary delays, and by shifting to a higher gear earlier (fifth gear is the most economical) you can help to achieve and maintain a lower engine speed, and therefore a lower fuel consumption – it is also advisable to speed up with the accelerator pedal pushed right down.

Keep your windows closed

By keeping windows closed and using the in-car ventilation system, fuel consumption is reduced by up to 5%.

Switch your engine off if you have to wait longer than 30-60 seconds

If you have to wait longer than 30 seconds in your car without moving, if possible switch off your engine; stationary cars with engines running waste fuel.
