Toyota in Europe

Our commitment to Europe
We are a global company, but for more than 60 years Toyota has steadily grown and invested in European design studios and manufacturing facilities. Today, our operations provide meaningful employment for over 26,000 direct employees, and we work with around 450 European suppliers, contributing more than €8 billion to the regional economy each year. We remain committed to contributing to European society for the long term, with a focus on continuous improvement.

A European company with Japanese roots

We started small, importing just 400 cars from Japan in 1963. Since then, we’ve made Europe one of our most important and vibrant markets, with over 16.5 million vehicles on European roads today. As we’ve grown, we’ve invested billions of euros in European design studios and manufacturing facilities, providing thousands of rewarding careers. Most importantly, because we make our cars where we sell them, we’re supporting local communities and creating long-lasting value.
  • Since 1963

In 1963, 400 Toyota Crowns were shipped from Japan to our first European distributor – Erla Auto – thus starting Toyota’s long involvement in Europe.

  • >25,000

We directly employ over 25,000 people across Europe.

  • EUR 12B+

Since establishing our first operations facilities in the 1990s we have invested over EUR 12B+ locally.

  • 8 plants in 6 countries

We operate 8 manufacturing plants in 6 countries in Europe.

  • EUR 8 bn/year

We spend over EUR 8 bn with 450 European-based suppliers annually.

  • 28 National Marketing & Sales Companies (NMSCs)

We operate a network of 28 NMSCs and sell our vehicles in 53 countries.

  • ~2700 dealerships

A network or more than 2,300 Toyota outlets and more than 370 Lexus outlets.

  • 23 logistic centres

14 parts logistics centres & 9 vehicle logistic centres.

Designed in Europe, loved by Europeans

Our purpose is simple: to design and build a better future of mobility, for everyone. In Europe, this means creating solutions that bring pleasure and value to our customers. The Toyota Europe Design Development (ED²) studio on the Côte d’Azur, France and our on-site proving ground at our Technical Centre in Zaventem, Belgium make sure we keep pace with European customers’ evolving tastes and requirements.

Made in Europe, driven by Europeans

We’ve expanded our manufacturing capacity in Europe steadily since the 1970s. Today, seven in ten Toyota vehicles sold in Europe are built at one of our eight European production centres.

We keep learning and improving, and the factories and offices we’ve established help us find new ways to reduce waste, conserve resources, and cut emissions. As our European business has grown, so has the need to handle more parts efficiently. In 2024 we invested over €12 billion in our European supply chain.

Fourteen regional Parts Logistic Centres and nine Vehicle Logistics Centres ship parts and vehicles faster, with lower impact.

Supporting our customers throughout Europe

We sell our vehicles in 53 European countries. For most of our customers in Europe, the first point of contact is our network of 2800 trusted retailers, who sell new and used vehicles and parts, and provide service, maintenance and repair. We support those retailers with 28 National Marketing and Sales Companies that provide marketing, sales and aftersales service.
  • Toyota Connected Europe

We’re changing the way people experience mobility. Toyota Connected Europe uses connected vehicle data to power smart products, solutions and innovations for our customers. At our innovation hub in London, our multi-disciplinary team manages all EU data for our Connected Car services, creating inclusive, sustainable, and safety-focused tech that makes a positive impact on society.

  • Our Journey in Europe

Every journey starts with a single step. For us, it was launching a practically unknown car brand in Europe sixty years ago.
