Sustainability

At the heart of everything we do
We at Toyota see ourselves as more than a company providing all-round mobility solutions. We are citizens of the world, and therefore have a responsibility towards the planet - to leave things better than we find them.

Sustainability at Toyota

Sustainability is fundamental to how we do business. We contribute to the earth's sustainability and societal development through business activities in cooperation with global society. Toyota seeks to ensure that public policy, societal needs, technology development, and consumer needs are aligned to the greatest extent possible. Wanting to make the future brighter and doing things for someone other than ourselves are the principles behind our philosophy. This supports our sustained efforts to achieve the aims of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to ensure that ‘no one will be left behind’.

Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050

It is our duty to conserve resources and manage our ecological footprint in the interest of future generations. We have been conducting environmental initiatives since the 1960s. In 1992 we established the Toyota Earth Charter and in 2015 we formulated our long-term global initiatives as the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050. It commits us to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve carbon neutrality globally by 2050, for our vehicles and operations. Our commitment goes further, by improving water usage, promoting end-of-life and recycling technologies, and establishing a society in harmony with nature.

Our ‘human-centred’ approach

Ever since its founding, Toyota’s core value has always been to contribute to society in meaningful ways, looking for easier ways to do things. This stems from the company founder’s motivation to create an automatic loom to relieve the work burden of his mother. Toyota still applies this ‘human-centred’ philosophy. At its heart is the concept that technology should contribute to people's happiness and health. We are committed to promote and develop quality employment, a diverse and inclusive workplace, and improve society through sustainable innovation.
