Carbon Neutrality

The vision: a society where people, mobility and nature can coexist in harmony
Our ultimate aim is to help build a sustainable and low-carbon society. The journey towards that goal involves developing measures to minimise the environmental impact of our activities.

On our way to minimising emissions

Our strategy to reach carbon neutrality involves offering customers affordable electrified* cars, promoting charging infrastructure, designing cars that allow raw materials to be recycled, and sourcing renewable energy. Toyota's multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality is about offering solutions that best meet each customer’s needs, wherever they live and whatever their individual circumstances.

*An electrified car is one propelled by an electric motor to some extent. Some electrified cars are entirely electric. Others, including Hybrids and Plug-in Hybrids, also have a petrol engine.

  • SCOPE 1

Direct Emissions from owned or controlled sources*

The vast majority of Toyota Motor Europe Scope 1 emissions will be mitigated by promoting energy reduction activities such as Kaizen (improvement) measures, introducing innovative technologies to reduce natural gas consumption, and eliminating fossil fuels at all manufacturing locations.

  • SCOPE 2

Indirect Emissions from generation of purchased energy (mainly electricity).

By consistently using 100% renewable electricity across Europe since 2019, we are eliminating electricity-related scope 2 emissions, in all our European operations*, according to the GHG protocol market-based method.

  • SCOPE 3

Indirect Emissions of uncontrolled sources in our value chain, for example the use of our sold vehicles, upstream and downstream logistics, and purchased parts.

As the European regulatory framework transitions new vehicle sales towards zero tailpipe emissions, we aim to meet customer needs through battery electric vehicles and mobility solutions, supporting a 100% reduction in tailpipe emissions** (WLTP) from new vehicles sold in Western Europe by 2035. By 2040, we are committed to achieving the greatest emissions reductions feasible across purchasing and logistics, leveraging supply chain collaboration, innovation, and lower-emission transport and sourcing solutions.

* Manufacturing, Logistics, National Distributors, Corporate Offices
** Emissions may still exist at other stages of the product lifecycle (extraction, manufacturing, logistics, maintenance, recycling/scrapping, energy production) but also during use (tyres, brakes, etc.)

Beyond carbon neutrality

Reaching carbon neutrality is critically important, but there’s even more work to do. In line with the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, we’re also committed to taking specific measures to preserve water, promote a recycling-based economy, and safeguard biodiversity.
