Toyota Multi-Pathway Powertrains

The many paths to carbon neutrality
Our multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality is about supporting customers on the journey to reducing tailpipe carbon emissions. Whatever your circumstances, we’ll provide a range of vehicles that meet your needs, and help reach our target of carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040.

Fully committed to carbon neutrality for everyone

Meeting our customers’ diverse mobility needs takes more than a one-size-fits-all approach. Some regions might lack charging infrastructure for battery electric cars, for example. That’s why we believe that providing a full array of powertrains will help us reach carbon neutrality faster. So we’re making Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHEV), Hybrid Vehicles (HEV), Internal Combustion Engines optimised for Carbon Neutral Fuels (ICE CNF) Hydrogen Engine Vehicles (H2), and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV). We believe that this inclusive approach gets more people on track sooner, enabling us to decarbonise mobility without leaving anyone behind.
“The way to reduce the most net carbon emissions globally is to use every item in our toolbox, including Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid, Battery Electric and Fuel Cell Vehicles.”
Gill Pratt, TMC Chief Scientist & TRI CEO

35 million electrified* sales and counting

Sales of electrified vehicles  in Europe are among the highest in the world. To date we’ve sold over 35 million electrified* vehicles worldwide, with over 7 million in Europe, where electrified* vehicles represent 77% of all vehicle sales. We’re committed to further expanding our BEV portfolio, introducing new Lexus and Toyota BEVs to bring the total count to 13 models in Europe by 2026.

Alongside our well-known hybrids, and fuel-cell vehicles like the Mirai, wewe keep on improving our plug-in hybrid cars, as well as working to decarbonise heavy-duty transportation with fuel-cell technology. This comprehensive line-up of electrified* vehicles allows our European customers to choose the path to carbon neutrality that suits them best.

Advancing the carbon neutrality cause

Our multi-pathway approach is designed to provide practical and accessible solutions,  both in Europe and across the world. As well as providing electrified* vehicles that help customers to contribute to carbon reduction, we’ve also made over 24,000 patents for advanced electrification technologies freely available. These include the core systems that are used in all types of vehicles – BEVs, Fuel Cell Vehicles, Plug-in Hybrids and Hybrids.
“It’s about all customers feeling they are empowered to make the right choice for themselves. Providing choice and opportunity is at the heart of ever-better cars and everything we do - and that includes the path to sustainability.”
Simon Humphries, CBO and Board member of TMC
