Meet our President

Akio Toyoda became our President and CEO in 2009. A grandson of Kiichiro Toyoda, he represents another generation of the family which founded Toyota Motor Corporation. He joined the business in 1984 as an entry-level employee, having gained a degree in law in Japan and a Master’s degree in business administration in the USA. He has international experience of every phase of our automotive operations. He has been on our board of directors since 2000 and became a senior managing director in 2003.

What makes us Toyota?

As the third president from Toyota’s founding family, Akio Toyoda has an unmatched love of company traditions. Yet he is somewhat of a maverick in his own right, at times breaking convention without a second thought. Akio’s words and deeds throughout 2020’s global crisis were full of surprises. They revealed his unique character. This key phrase sums up what makes Akio Toyoda who he is: “We’ll bring back what makes us Toyota.” Consistently repeating this mantra since becoming president, he has worked to tackle numerous, almost incomprehensible challenges,  and he has done it in the Toyota Way.
  • Where do we come from?

Sakichi Toyoda’s success in developing automatic loom technology provided a sound commercial foundation for his son Kiichiro to pursue his dream of making vehicles. His vision was inspired by the new mass-production methods he saw in Europe and the USA. Today we have grown to become one of the world’s largest and best-known automobile manufacturing businesses. We employ more than 360,000 people and make vehicles in factories on every continent. Our vehicles and related services are sold in more than 170 countries and territories.

  • Where are we going?

Throughout our expansion we have remained true to the philosophy that is at the heart of our corporate culture. Our aim is to help build a more prosperous society with a business that values respect and fairness and which grows in harmony with the global community. We strive to enhance the quality of people’s lives by using our skills and advanced technologies to create great new products and services.
