After leading the world with its first hydrogen-powered sedan in 2014, Toyota is ready to take zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) technology to new heights with the second generation Mirai concept, as showcased at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
Far more than an eco-car, the new Mirai pushes the boundaries of hydrogen power and reveals the potential of Toyota’s fuel cell technology, with driving range extended by up to 30%, a more exciting drive and improved acceleration. It’s an enticing glimpse into Toyota’s vision for clean mobility and a future hydrogen society.
The current Mirai created global awareness for how a hydrogen society might be achieved. With around 10,000 sold globally, it is a car both technically sophisticated and practical, with a driving range of around 500km, easy refuelling and no emissions other than pure water.
The concept revealed in Tokyo hints at the advances coming down the track for hydrogen power, in technical excellence, dynamic performance, and desirable design. Scheduled for launch in 2020, initially in Japan and North America, the new Mirai shows that that FCEV technology is no barrier to a thrilling drive and beautiful looks.
Toyota targets a 30% increase in the Mirai’s driving range through improvements to the fuel cell stack and larger on-board hydrogen tanks. But the ambitions of its creator go far beyond the figures.
The latest rear wheel drive modular platform allows for five seats instead of the current four, but the real impact comes from low lines, elegant proportions, sleek, taut bodywork and 20-inch wheels, creating a powerful and distinctive look. The preview car also exhibits a special new blue paint finish that uses multiple layers to achieve an exceptional brightness and depth of colour. A simple, modern interior space with a comfortable ambience increases the sense this is a car to be enjoyed, including a 12.3-inch centre display and an instrument panel that wraps around the driver.
The latest rear wheel drive modular platform platform not only accommodates the new Mirai’s advanced hydrogen fuel cell powertrain and rear wheel drive, but also allows more body rigidity, leading to greater agility and response, while its lower centre of gravity aids nimble handling. The upgraded fuel cell stack is responsible for the new Mirai’s smooth acceleration and elegant driving feel. Handling is light and easy on winding roads, while highway driving permits a sense of power at all speeds as well as the improved range to be experienced.
