02/03/2023
In their quest for sustainable mobility, the largest taxi company in Hamburg, Best Taxi have now incorporated 25 Toyota Mirai cars in their fleet to operate in the Hanseatic city. The fuel cell cars offer long range and quick refuelling while emitting nothing but water.

Hamburg’s zero emission target

By January 2025, only taxis that are emission-free will be able to receive a new license in Hamburg. It will  be the first German city to introduce this regulation, while 12 percent of Hamburg's taxi fleet are already zero-emission vehicles today. Best Taxi, Hamburg's largest single taxi provider has now introduced 25 Toyota Mirai* in its fleet. The company has been operating 40 battery electric taxis for some time, and is now introducing fuel cell electric ones.

New Mirai fleet handover attracts great interest

The fleet of 25 fuel cell limousines was handed over to Best Taxi by the Toyota car dealership Autohaus S+K. Attending the event to highlight the zero emissions mobility initiative were politicians, the local retailer and Toyota Deutschland - among others, Anjes Tjarks (Alliance 90/The Greens),  Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition, Ali Simsek, Member of the Hamburg Senate (SPD), Alexander Mönch,  President of the DACH Region Free Now, Thomas Schalberger, General Manager Press and Public Relations at Toyota Deutschland GmbH, as well as Mathias Süchting and Carsten Schulz from the management of Autohaus S+K were present.
In a large city like Hamburg, the taxi industry is an important driver towards sustainable mobility and we are pleased to be able to make our contribution to this development. Taxis are constantly in use and travel many kilometres every day. The hydrogen fuel cell drive is a particularly sustainable and practicable solution that also contributes to improving air quality in the city.

Long drives for long hours

The second generation of the Toyota Mirai offers a range up to 650 kilometres and can be refuelled in just a few minutes. The car is ready to drive again in five minutes which is found very convenient by the recent new drivers, who no longer have to schedule an hour or more for battery charging. Under the hood of the Mirai, a fuel cell converts the hydrogen into electrical energy, which in turn drives a 130 kW/182 hp electric motor. Only water vapour is produced as an emission during the journey. The Toyota Mirai provides a unique customer experience, combining the practical advantages of long range, fast refuelling with an emission-free drive and an electric driving experience.
