The CaetanoBus H2.City Gold bus is becoming increasingly popular! CaetanoBus, part of Toyota Caetano Portugal, is to provide public transport operators in France, Germany, Italy and Spain with their hydrogen-powered electric buses.

Largest framework agreement in France for H2 buses

The city of Strasbourg, home of the European Parliament, intends to invest in hydrogen mobility in the coming years. CaetanoBus is the first company to be awarded by the city to supply hydrogen-powered electric buses. Up to 60 H2.City Gold buses will be supplied in the next five years. This is the biggest framework agreement ever in France for hydrogen-powered electric buses to a single bus operator. Thanks to this contract with CTS (Compagnie des Transports Strasbourgeois), CaetanoBus is now the European bus manufacturer with the biggest backlog of orders for electric hydrogen-powered buses.

Positive feedback in France

The H2.City Gold bus has been in operation in France since 2022 with RATP in La Roche-sur-Yon. The city of Les Sables d' Olonne will receive their first units this year. At the end of 2022, the H2.City Gold was selected to be part of the catalogue of CATP (Centrale d'Achat du Transport Public). Additionally, an H2.City Gold demo bus is giving demonstrations in several French cities. The feedback from bus operators, drivers and passengers has been extremely positive

Further orders in Germany, Italy and Spain

Deutsche Bahn in Germany recently ordered 60 H2.City Gold buses. In Italy, Industria Italiana Autobus (IIA) is to provide Italian bus company SASA Bolzano with five CaetanoBus hydrogen buses as part of the commercial agreement signed last year with CaetanoBus. The H2.City Gold buses will be powered via a hydrogen filling station installed within the public transport company’s depot. In Spain, public transport operator EMT Madrid recently ordered ten H2.City Gold buses from CaetanoBus. They are to be delivered to Madrid by the end of the first quarter of 2024.

Second-generation fuel cell technology

The H2.City Gold, co-branded by CaetanoBus and Toyota, is a standard low-floor lightweight bus with an aluminium body. From 2024 it will be equipped with the new generation of the Toyota Fuel Cell Stack. The buses are also equipped with a small lithium-titanium-oxide (LTO) battery pack with a capacity of 44 kWh, and a powertrain with a peak power of 180 kW. This is the perfect combination to ensure optimal efficiency. The H2.City Gold will offer an autonomy of over 500 km in a single refill, which matches the autonomy of a conventional diesel bus.
“We are delighted to be part of the scale up of hydrogen fleets in Europe in order to support the decarbonisation targets and help future generations have a better quality of life. Hydrogen mobility is crucial for the decarbonisation of public transport, and we are very committed to providing this technology now to the city of Strasbourg and in the future to more French cities."
